Research into practice - closing the gap

An online panel discussion with Catherine Nickerson and David Kertzner; moderated by Evan Frendo.

Come and join us for a panel discussion in which we explore research into practice in a business English context. We will be asking questions about how research has influenced business English teaching, and examine some of the significant successes as well as some of the frustrations and disappointments. We also plan to touch on a number of topical themes, including research into spoken and written discourse, BELF, new media, and gaining access to research. Overall we are most interested in exploring how we can better apply research findings to our work as BE practitioners.

We are honoured to have two eminent panellists joining us: Catherine Nickerson, Professor of Business Communication at Zayed University in Dubai, and David Kertzner, based in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A.

The discussion will be moderated by Evan Frendo, a freelance trainer, teacher trainer and author based in Berlin, Germany.

IATEFL BESIG members and non-members alike are most welcome.

Catherine Nickerson, Professor of Business Communication at Zayed University, Dubai, is well known to many BESIG members. She has published countless books and research articles relevant to business English teaching, most recently Introducing Business English (Routledge, 2016), which she co-wrote with Brigitte Planken.

David Kertzner, based in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A., has considerable experience of meeting the needs of corporate clients. His company, Proactive English, which he founded in 1997, is a web-integrated, English language and communication training provider serving a wide variety of multinational corporations in different parts of the world.

The discussion will be moderated by Evan Frendo, a freelance trainer, teacher trainer and author based in Berlin, Germany. A frequent speaker at conferences, he also travels regularly in Europe and Asia to run courses or to work as a consultant.
