BESIG Online Team

The IATEFL BESIG Online Team (BOT) was created in 2010 to manage the SIG's online activities and is responsible for BESIG's social media (NING, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) and our online events, such as the popular monthly Weekend Workshops and occasional webinars.

As of June 2011 the BESIG Online team consists of the following SIG members.

Carl Dowse - Web Coordinator


Carl DowseCarl Dowse has been involved in English language teaching since 1992, and currently has a full-time lectureship at the Fachhochschule fur Ökonomie & Management in Essen, Germany, with overall responsibility for undergraduate business English courses.

Carl has a keen interested in the use of ICT in language teaching and is a member of the Consultants-E teacher training team and moderates a number of courses including an online version of the Cert IBET and Moodle training courses.

Carl also writes teaching materials, including a teacher's guide for the German publishers Cornelsen and online study activities for the Cambridge University Press backed business English learning platform English360. He also develops teacher training materials for world-wide use within the British Council..

Mike Hogan - BOT Member


Mike Hogan Mike Hogan is a business English trainer, teacher trainer and author based in Hamburg, Germany. He is currently working in business development where he develops and implements innovative training concepts for corporate clients, with current areas of interest in blended and virtual learning. His publications include Business English for Beginners A1/A2 (Cornelsen 2011) and Basis for Business B1 (Cornelsen 2011) and contributions to Business Spotlight magazine.

Mercedes Viola - BOT Member


Mercedes ViolaMercedes Viola lives in Uruguay, together with her husband and three kids. She holds a degree from the Universidad de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay and is currently taking an MA in TESOL. She has been running an English institute for 20 years, being in charge of:

- designing and implementing business English learning experiences for government-owned organizations, universities and many well known international companies such as Microsoft, HP, American Express, Deloitte, John Deere and MasterCard;

- designing materials for business English clients

- supervising the development of specific courses in different business areas Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration and Marketing.;

- implementing new technologies in education.

She is also a writer for the Teaching English site of the British Council.

Andi White - BOT Member


Andi WhiteAndi White is a teacher and a teacher trainer currently pursuing her Masters in English Language Teaching and Linguistics.  After having been based in Germany for over ten years, she has relocated to Canterbury, UK, where she is involved in business English courses and teacher training for Pilgrims and is also responsible for social media aspects of the OISE group.

Andi has taught both general and business English, with her main interests lying in ICT and learner autonomy. She has been part of the BOT for the second year running and was also part of the IATEFL online team in Harrogate and Brighton. She is the current chair of the Hamburg English Language Teachers Association.
